Directions Roadside signs like this will be set up to guide attendees from US Rt 50 into Timber Ridge Camp, and then back out. ![]() Google Maps warning: On June 21, 2009, I discovered that Google Maps has LOST a short section of the road into Timber Ridge camp. The road really is there, but Google Maps won't show or use it, and will instead try to send you on non-existant roads, as reported down below. Therefore, our Google maps directions have been modified to end where the route to camp branches left off of Hooks Mill Rd (at: 39.224517, -78.457618). Our roadside signs will guide you the last mile from there. We have also added (in parentheses) some Microsoft Bing maps directions, that go all the way to the camp. Our preferred route from the Washington area is to take the Dulles Toll Rd (VA Route 267) west from the Washington Beltway (I-495), continuing on the Dulles Greenway (also Route 267, with tolls), then VA Rt 7 west to Winchester. This route has lots of traffic, and tolls, but it is not as vulnerable to rain and accidents as I-66. The total tolls are $4.65, payable in cash or with E-ZPass. It is fastest to go around the north end of Winchester by taking I-81 North to Route 37 South. Here are Google Maps directions (Bing Maps) for this route. Or, you can go through Winchester on Rt 7 to Rt 50 (Bing Maps). To avoid tolls, here are Google Maps directions to take VA Rt 7 west all the way from the Washington Beltway (I-495), but note that during evening rush hour, VA Rt 7 westbound is very heavily travelled and often slow at least until you get to Leesburg, VA. Here are Google Maps directions from Dulles Airport to the camp, via the Greenway and VA Rt 7 west. Here are the camps "Directions to Timber Ridge Camp." Their directions from Washington, D.C. use Interstate Route 66 to the west. Here are Google Maps directions for that route. That route is toll-free and fairly straightforward, but is very heavily travelled from the Washington Beltway (I-495) west to Gainesville (where US Rt 29 turns south). During Friday afternoon commute/escape, I-66 can get really slow, especially in rainy weather. While Google Maps says "up to 2 hours 10 mins in traffic", I would allow at least 2.5 hours to travel from the Washington Beltway (I-495) to Timber Ridge Camp on a Friday afternoon. For Washington area traffic reports, "every 10 minutes on the 8's", tune to WTOP radio, 103.5 FM. Here are some landmarks and mileage readings starting at the exit from Route 37 onto Route 50, on the west side of Winchester, VA (Your Mileage May Vary):
If you're coming from the west on Route 50, the drive from Capon Bridge south to Timber Ridge Camp is about 7.5 miles. From US Rt 50, take Christian Church Rd, NOT Cacapon River Rd. Here are Google Maps directions. Microsoft Bing Maps has by far the highest resolution aerial images that I have found of Timber Ridge camp. Follow this link, then zoom in ALL the way and click on "Aerial" along the top border of the map. You can easily see that the nonexistant roads discussed below really don't exist.
Helpful Google Maps hints: I have not found a mapable street address for Timber Ridge Camp, but this works: CR-13/3 @39.229320, -78.464480 A Caution about nonexistant roads that Google Maps and MapQuest and Microsoft Bing Maps show near Timber Ride Camp: They all show Hooks Mill Rd as continuing onward after the Timber Ridge Camp turnoff, crossing the Cacapon River to end at Cacapon River Rd. Maybe it once did so, but now Hooks Mill Rd dead-ends at the next farm. They also show another entry road into Timber Ridge Camp, reachable by turning off of Hooks Mill Rd at the river, but that also does not exist. So, for the last few miles, from Route 259 to the camp, stick to the Directions to Timber Ridge Camp or the written directions and pre-canned Google Maps directions on this page. |
