Directions Google Maps has fixed the old errors in their database near Timber Ridge camp, and now can find the camp by name, as "timber ridge camp, high view, wv". Mapquest and Bing Maps don't do as well near Timber Ridge. For GPS, a latitude/longitude location for Timber Ridge camp is: 39.229320, -78.464480 FROM THE EAST:Our preferred Friday Rush Hour route from the Washington area is to take the Dulles Toll Rd (VA Route 267) west from the Washington Beltway (I-495), continuing on the Dulles Greenway (also Route 267, with tolls), then VA Rt 7 west to Winchester. This route has lots of traffic, and has tolls, but it is not as vulnerable to rain and accidents as I-66. As of August 2011, the total tolls are $6.50 during rush hour (weekdays: 6:30 am to 9:00 am eastbound, 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm westbound) and $5.70 otherwise, payable in cash or with E-ZPass. It is fastest to go around the north end of Winchester by taking I-81 North to Route 37 South. Here are Google Maps directions (Bing Maps) for this route. To avoid tolls, here are Google Maps directions to take VA Rt 7 west all the way from the Washington Beltway (I-495), but note that during evening rush hour, VA Rt 7 westbound is very heavily travelled and often slow at least until you get to Leesburg, VA. ALTERNATIVES FROM THE EAST:Here are Google Maps directions from Dulles Airport, via the Greenway and VA Rt 7 west. Another option for coming from Washington, D.C. is to use Interstate Route 66 to the west. Here are Google Maps directions for that route. That route is toll-free and fairly straightforward, but is very heavily travelled from the Washington Beltway (I-495) west to Gainesville (where US Rt 29 turns south). During the normal Friday afternoon commute/escape, I-66 can get really slow, especially in rainy weather. While Google Maps says "up to 2 hours 10 mins in traffic", I would allow at least 2.5 hours to travel from the Washington Beltway (I-495) to Timber Ridge Camp on a Friday afternoon. Yet another option for coming from Washington, D.C. is to use Interstate Route 66 to VA Route 50 to the west, as Google Maps suggests. FROM THE WEST:If you're coming from the west on Route 50, the drive from Capon Bridge south to Timber Ridge Camp is about 7.5 miles. From US Rt 50, go south on Christian Church Rd, NOT Cacapon River Rd. After about 5.5 miles, you will turn right onto Hooks Mill Road, joining the directions below at step 7. Here are Google Maps directions. It's a pretty drive, but has several very sharp corners, so stay alert and watch your speed. FROM THE RTE 37/50 INTERSECTION NEAR WINCHESTER:Here are Timber Ridge camp's own Directions, which start at the intersection of Route 37 and Route 50, on the west side of Winchester, VA. Here are some landmarks and mileage readings starting at the exit from Route 37 onto Route 50, on the west side of Winchester, VA:
Caution about nonexistent roads that Mapquest and Bing Maps show near Timber Ridge Camp: They both show Hooks Mill Rd as continuing onward after the Timber Ridge Camp turnoff, crossing the Cacapon River to end at Cacapon River Rd. Maybe it once did so, but now Hooks Mill Rd dead-ends quickly, at the next farm. Mapquest shows another entry road into Timber Ridge Camp, reachable by turning off of Hooks Mill Rd about 1/5 mile earlier than our directions, but that also does not exist. And Bing shows a THIRD nonexistent road into TR, starting at the (also nonexistent) bridge on Hooks Mill Rd. We strongly recommend, for the last few miles (from Route 259 to the Camp), that you use Google Maps, or the Directions to Timber Ridge Camp, or the directions above from step 3, and follow the FootFall signs!! |
